Schools Will Not Likely Close Over Swine Flu

Tools

Some school districts in Western New York open their doors later this week, fueling concern that the swine flu could rear its ugly head again soon.
In the last year, more than three-dozen American children have died from the virus and classrooms are good breeding grounds for the disease, but no drastic measures are planned yet.
Government officials say schools won't close except under exceptional circumstances, saying a massive school closing wouldn't stop swine flu, just spread the cases over a longer period.
A target date for a swine flu vaccine is mid-October. Until then, schools are encouraging: good hand hygiene, covering noses and mouths when coughing or sneezing, and staying home when you are sick.
