It was a somber day at Buffalo United Charter School as students and staff learned of the deaths of two students.

"Everyone was sad we couldn't really work," said one student.

Brothers Amir and Shamel Middleton, 9 and 11 years old died Monday morning in a car accident in Ontario County.

"He was a good friend and a helpful person," said Nayana Bolden, a third grader at Buffalo United Charter School who was in the same class as Amir. "When he's in school, he tells us jokes and makes us laugh," she said.

Grief counselors were on hand for students and staff, and will be for the rest of the week.

State Police say the boys died after the SUV they were riding in landed on its side on the thruway between Geneva and Manchester. They were on their way home to Buffalo from Brooklyn.

Buffalo United Charter School released a statement saying:

The entire Buffalo United Charter School community is sadden by the loss of our two scholars, Amir and Shamel Middleton. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends as they deal with this difficult loss.

As a school community, we will continue to share our memories and remember fondly both young scholars. Grief counselors will be on hand for all students and staff in the coming days.
