From floor to roof, Erie County high school students have built two homes as part of the "Building Trades" program at BOCES.
Seniors built two homes: a three bedroom ranch-style home at the Harkness Career and Technical Center and a "tiny house" at the Kenton Career and Technical Center.
The three bedroom home goes up for auction on June 9th in the school's parking lot at 9 a.m. and the tiny house goes up for auction on June 2nd at 9 a.m.
"The average age of a journeyman right now is mid-fifities. This industry is hurting for young people," says Chris Burgio, an instructor at the Harkness Career and Technical Center.
The 'Building Trades' program teaches valuable and real-world construction skills, like carpentry, electrical wiring and plumbing. Students from across the county bus to one of the two career centers for their class daily.
This is the first year students have built a tiny house. The home was built on a trailer bed and is ready to be bought and moved to a more permanent location.
Both homes have gone through rigorous inspection processes.
The three-bedroom home's average auction price is close to $40,000.
