About 450 Walgreens Pharmacies across the state will begin selling the anti-overdose medication Naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, over the counter in New York.

According to the New York Daily News, both Walgreens and Duane Reade Pharmacies will begin offering the drug Monday.

Narcan is commonly used to reverse drug overdoses caused by opioids like heroin or prescription painkillers. Narcan temporarily blocks the effects of the opioid so that the victim who is suffering an overdose can regain consciousness and resume normal breathing.

CVS Pharmacies announced they would offer Narcan over the counter in January.
