A source close to the investigation of a Buffalo man, who died after being taken into police custody, says autopsy results reveal he died of pre-existing respiratory conditions.

Authorities say 20-year-old Wardel Davis was stopped by police on the city's west side in February.

Police said they were investigating suspicious activity in the area when they questioned Davis and he took off. Investigators say when officers caught up with him, a struggle began and Davis suffered a medical emergency and died at Buffalo General Hospital.

The State Attorney General's Office is investigating the incident and issued this statement:

"Our hearts go out to Mr. Davis' family. We are committed to conducting a full, fair, and comprehensive independent investigation, which is still ongoing at this time."

Mayor Byron Brown has also issued a statement:

"I am aware of media reports that the Erie County Medical Examiner has found that this tragedy was brought on by a pre-existing medical condition. However, I have not seen any official reports- which is appropriate - because in this case the New York State Attorney General is responsible for completing a thorough and independent investigation. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with Mr. Davis's family and all of those who have been impacted by this tragedy."
