The plot has taken a new twist in the murder of Kelley Clayton in the small Southern Tier town of Caton. Her husband, Thomas Clayton, is charged with her death.

The Steuben County District Attorney called the killing a "murder for hire" outside of Clayton's bail hearing Monday morning. A judge set bail for Clayton, who is charged with second degree murder, at $250,000.

Thomas Clayton is a former hockey play at Niagara University. He then turned pro with the minor league Elmira Jackals.

On Sunday, a second person was charged in connection with the murder of a woman in the Southern Tier. Forty-four-year-old Michael Beard is also behind bars on one charge of second degree murder. Police have not yet elaborated what his role may have been.

Kelley Clayton was killed in her home outside Corning last week. Her husband was arrested a short time later.

Authorities attributed blunt force trauma as a cause of death.
