The holiday season is upon us and it's time for the 11th Annual Rock Out Hunger Thanksgiving Drive.

From November 16th through Thanksgiving Eve, Western New Yorkers are encouraged to bring a turkey, canned food items or even monetary donations to the event. The donations can be dropped off at a large trailer at the Eastern Hills Mall.

This event benefits The Food Bank of Western New York. They are in need of 5,000 turkeys and trimming to distribute to Western New York families in need, just in time for Thanksgiving.

At least 1 out of 7 people in Western New York struggle with hunger. The need for meals is up 8-percent from last year.

"Hunger is 365 days a year but unfortunately we definitely see a spike around the holiday season," Catherine Shick with The Food Bank of Western New York said.

She said many of these families who are in need are working class families who have fallen on hard times. Many of these families are having to decide rather to pay the heat bill or buy food.

DJ Jickster from 97 Rock will be living in the donation trailer the entire week collecting the goods, and the food will be distributed to families in need next week.

7 Eyewitness News is once again a proud co-sponsor of this event.
