The controversial ride-sharing bill overcame one hurdle Fridayday. The NY Senate passed its version of the bill on the last day of the current legislative session.
However, without a same-as bill remains in the NYS Assembly and it's unclear if the legislation will move on for Governor Andrew Cuomo's approval.
Senators voted 44-17 for the bill that would allow for the expansion of ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft into Western New York.
Lyft's Senior Director of Public Affairs applauded the Senate's vote.
"New York is now one step closer to enabling increased transportation options for riders; allowing for greater economic opportunity for drivers; and creating benefits to the community like reducing impaired driving and CO2 emissions," he said in a statement.
Senator Tim Kennedy from Buffalo voted yes for the bill. He's a strong supporter of bringing ride-sharing services to Western New York.
"Now is the time for buffalo to join the more than 400 other cities across the nation that utilize these versatile transportation networks, so that we can make it easier for folks to get home safely, and capitalize on the economic opportunity that awaits," he released in a statement.
Kennedy is calling on the Assembly to listen to the needs of New Yorkers.
"I sincerely hope my colleagues in the New York State Assembly recognize the demand for these kinds of services and take action before we close out the legislative session," he said.
Friday is the final day of the current legislative session.
