Christmas 2014 is now in the books and now New Year’s Eve is around the corner. Drivers are once again being reminded to not drink and drive.

The NYS Thruway Authority is teaming up again this year with Mothers Against Drunk Driving for the Red Ribbon Initiative. At select thruway toll booths, drivers will be given those now familiar red ribbons. It’s a pledge to keep the highways safe this holiday season.

Elizabeth Obad, head of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, said, “Well we know that people will be out celebrating for New Year’s Eve and the weekend is here and college kids are home. Please drive sober or have a sober designated driver. We want to remind people that all our thruway signs will be lit up with the message too so everyone can get home safely.”

Some 150,000 red ribbons will be handed out to drivers – a practice that began in 1986 here in New York.
