BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) - The Buffalo Superhero Race and Wellness Walk brought thousands of people together in Delaware Park Friday night.
"We are running to raise awareness of mental health, to promote mental health and we're also trying to beat down the stigma of mental illness," said Ken Houseknecht, Executive Director of the Mental Health Association.
The race was the first major event to be held in Delaware Park since the death of 3-year-old Maksym Sugorovskiy. It was last Saturday when a car jumped the curb along Rt. 198, striking the little boy and his sister as they were walking near Ring Road.
Since that tragedy, safety measures, including a reduced speed limit and concrete barriers lining the road, have been put in place to ensure a tragedy doesn't happen again.
"Because they increased the safety issues, I think it made it a lot better for this event and not just another event in Delaware Park," said race participant, Grace Parton.
