NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. ( WKBW ) The Western New York delegation of elected officials in Washington, D.C are joining New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the fight to preserve the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Base, after the announcement Tuesday that major cuts could be forthcoming.
STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR CUOMO ON DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING REDUCTIONS AT NIAGARA FALLS AIR RESERVE STATION
"The plan announced today by the Department of Defense regarding reductions at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station is a blow to the Niagara Falls community and hundreds of New Yorkers who are employed at the base. Since WWII, the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station has served our nation, and the men and women stationed here have risked their lives in combat zones across the world. I have asked the Secretary of Defense to take into account the economic impact any planned reductions would have on Western New York. At my request, Lieutenant Governor Duffy is in Washington, D.C., today and tomorrow to meet with top officials at the White House and the Department of Defense to brief them on the importance of the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station to the community and the state. We will continue to make the case to protect Niagara and all of our bases."
WNY DELEGATION VOWS TO
FIGHT FOR NEW MISSION AT NFARS
The following is a statement from Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and Representatives Kathy Hochul (NY-26), Louise Slaughter (NY-28), and Brian Higgins (NY-27) following an announcement from the Department of Defense to eliminate the jobs of the Air National Guard's 107th Airlift Wing at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station (NFARS):
“We call on the Air Force to reverse this decision and to identify a new mission for the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. As a united delegation, along with the support of Governor Cuomo, we will continue to fight to protect this base, the positions it supports, and the thousands of Western New Yorkers that rely on its services.
“The Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station is an essential part of our nation’s military force, and we will not rest in the effort to find a new mission.”
