Washington, DC (WKBW) - Both President Obama and Governor Cuomo have discussed raising the minimum wage, but a new proposal could surpass both of their plans.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) is co-sponsoring the "Fair Minimum Wage Act."

The legislation would raise the minimum wage to $10.10 over the next three years.

In Erie County, one in five working adults earns minimum wage.

"The average minimum wage earner is a woman, age 35, they often have children, and she's working 40 hours a week but making 15-thousand dollars, $3000 below the poverty line," says Gillibrand.

Minimum wage is currently at $7.25 an hour.

The bill would raise the minimum wage by 95-cents each year for the next three years.
