Police find sawed-off shotgun under car seat

Police found sawed-off shotgun underneath a car seat during a traffic stop on Delaware Street in the City of Tonawanda.

City of Tonawanda Police say Victor Tavares Jr., 37, was stopped at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday and officers noticed a sawed off Ithaca 12 gauge shotgun. Officers say the barrel length as cut to six inches with the shotgun grips altered to simulate a pistol grip. Police also found 12 gauge shells in the car.

Police checked the gun in the gun clearing house computer system which showed the gun was "not on file."

When asked about the shotgun, Tavares told police, "I'm not going to get robbed."

Tavares also had a suspended registration due to no insurance. He was charged with criminal possession of a loaded firearm, criminal possession of a weapon, suspended registration and no insurance. He is being held until his court appearance.
