State police say two telecommunications contractors were carrying more than their tools when they cut through a parking lot at a trooper barracks to service a Hudson Valley cell tower.

Troopers say a rental truck drove through the rear parking lot of the barracks in the Dutchess County town of Wappinger around 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The truck headed into the wooded area around the communication tower at the rear of the property. An investigator thought it looked suspicious and asked uniformed troopers to accompany him to check it out.

Police learned the workers from Brooklyn and Paterson, New Jersey, were subcontracted by T-Mobile to work on the tower. During questioning, troopers noticed a strong odor of marijuana. A search turned up several bags of pot on the men.

Both were issued tickets for unlawful possession of marijuana.
