If it seems to good too be true--it probably is.

An Orleans County resident received a letter indicating they won $550,000 from Publishers Clearing House. Enclosed with the letter was a check of $7,897, which the letter claimed was part of the winnings.

The Orleans County Major Felony Crime Task Force and County District Attorney's office contacted SunTrust Bank and learned the scam was occurring across the country.

SunTrust reported the $7,897 check was counterfeit and under investigation by their security department and law enforcement authorities.

Publishers Clearing House, who was also contacted by county investigators, confirmed they were aware of the scam. They stated all prizes issued by them are made in person--not by mail.

Officials said the scam is typically designed to target the elderly.

Anyone who has received this type of letter or are suspicious of activity citing this type of activity should contact law enforcement.

The investigation is ongoing.
