Detective Sergeant Harvey Frankel

He spends his working hours protecting the public from harm on the Buffalo Police Department's Swat Team.
But last Sunday, our person of the week was off duty when disaster struck just down the block.

Buffalo firefighters got the call around a quarter after three - a house fire at 45 Doyle avenue. 88-year-old Florence Winarske lives in the home and tried her best to get away from the smoke and flames.

Firefighter Mike Swanekamp says, "It appears she got as far as the door but didn't get any further."

Fortunately for Winarske, a member of the Buffalo Police Department's swat team lives down the street. Detective Sergeant Harvey Frankel was at home when his seven year old daughter rushed in to tell her dad about the fire. Amy Snyder, who was visiting her parents nearby, witnessed the rescue.

"Amazing. Amazing.", says Snyder. "He was in the right place and the right time and knew what to do. He started working on her the minute he got her on the ground."

Mike Swanekamp echoes the sentiment.

"It was a really good thing that they did. They were able to find her and get her out. We're hoping for the best for her."

Florence Winarski remains in critical condition at the Erie County Medical Center tonight with serious burns. And although Detective Frankel gives his young daughter all the credit for telling him about the fire so quickly, we want to recognize him as our person of the week for doing his duty both on the job and off.
