A Western New York Marine, who died saving his fellow comrades, is being honored this weekend post-humously, and so we've chosen Cpl. Jason Dunham as our "Person of the Week."

He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his selfless actions. There was a book written about him and now the Navy is dedicating a ship in the Allegheny County man's name. It will be called the "U.S.S. Jason Dunham."

Dunham only lived to age 22, but he died a hero. "His entire life came down to one moment," said Former U.S. Navy Secretary Donald C. Winter in an interview with Eyewitness News back in March of 2007.

On April 14, 2004 Dunham was on patrol in Karabilah, Iraq when his squad was ambushed. He jumped on a live grenade, covering it with his helmet, to save the lives on two men in the unit he commanded. "He asked me if my son was Cpl. Jason Dunham, and I said yes," recalled Dunham's father Dan, in an interview with Eyewitness News back in 2004. "And he said that Jason had been involved in an explosion and that he was listed as critical with a head injury."

Dunham died 8 days later. He was awarded a Purple Heart and the Medal of Honor. But the Navy and many others wanted to do more for this young man who made the ultimate sacrifice.

So in December of 2005, building commenced on a Navy warship to be named after the Town of Scio man. "Indeed, there is no higher honor in the Navy than to have a ship named after you," said Winter.

Now, after four years later, the ship will be christened in a special ceremony, taking place tomorrow in Bath, Maine. Dunham's family will be there. His mother Deb is the ship sponsor.

After builder's trials, the U.S.S. Jason Dunham will join the Navy's fleet and sail to its homeport in San Diego, California, where other Marines will see Dunham's name every time they board the ship en route to a mission.

"I think God has done some wondrous things for Jason," said Dan Dunham.

In light of Cpl. Dunham's wondrous acts, all of us here at Channel 7 have decided to make him our Person of the Week. The dedication ceremony kicks off tomorrow morning at the Bath Iron Works shipyard at 10am. We will bring you video of it tomorrow night on Eyewitness News at 6pm.
