Clarence, NY (WKBW) - Many in Clarence are still in disbelief, after losing two high school seniors within a month.
Now, teachers and students at Clarence Senior High School are working on a special scholarship fund to remember Alex Hemline and Patrick Conway.
Steve Conway, Patrick's father, says the scholarship is" very heart-warming -- to have their lives mean something and move on."
Hemline and Conway were seniors and friends at Clarence Senior High School.
Hemline was killed in a car accident in early May. Just one month later, Conway died in a motorcycle crash.
Loved ones say that the two were dedicated to the community. Hemline, a junior volunteer firefighter, was fulfilling his dream. He went to the fire hall everyday.
"He jumped out of bed -- it was 9:00," Sue remembers of the morning her son died. "He was like mom, I'm off to the fire hall! He was happy."
Patrick worked tirelessly to join the Marine Corps. He earned an award for his physical fitness training and was heading to boot camp in August.
"I've never seen someone so dedicated to doing something," says Conway's sister Danielle. "He would have been the best marine."
The scholarship fund would go towards Clarence students with exceptional signs of community involvement and patriotism. Businesses, family, friends and complete strangers have reached out to help.
"It just seems still unreal, and everyday we have to take it day by day," says Conway's mother Dawn. "But everybody has been phenomenal."
A fundraiser for the Alex Hemline/Patrick Conway Scholarship Fund will take place Sunday, July 28th from 11 in the morning through 2 in the afternoon. The fundraiser will take place at the Harris Hill Volunteer Fire Department. Anyone donating towards the fund will receive a hotdog, snack and drink.
