Things to do with the Kids on Winter Break: Beaver Meadow!
Java, N.Y. (WKBW) - It's located only about 50 minutes from downtown Buffalo but it is like a different world. "We are the Beaver Meadow Audubon Center," Director Mark Carra said. Those who run the center said their one main goal is to get kids away from the video games and I-Pods, into the real world. "It's a place were kids can reconnect with nature. In our busy world we don't go out into nature as much as we used," Carra said. Mark Carra with the Center said it's a great day trip for families and they have a lot to offer. "We have a lot of snow showers and we have trails that go through a wonderland of nature. We have ponds with beavers that are active. You can see trails of footprints of animals that are active out there," Carra said. There are also dozens of animals on display with Carra there to explain everything you need to know. Kids can even see the animals up-close and personal and he said it is about getting back to basics. "A sense of wonder of looking of nature with eyes you have to know. Everything in this place, every corner and stone has something around it that is wonderful and interesting," Carra said. Students can even watch birds outside without being in the cold. "It's a great place to bird watch. My favorite place is the room upstairs where you can watch a bird feeder. The most amazing array of birds comes to it," Carra said. Beaver Meadow is an adventure but you also learn about circle of life through animals, plants and more. "Everything we do is to try get people to understand their place in nature and how nature is a part of how the whole world works," Carra said.
