ALBANY, NY (WKBW) - Each year, thousands of first responders are severely injured driving to or from emergency calls. It is the second leading cause of death for on-duty volunteer firemen in the United States.
To mitigate the dangers, the Firemen's Association of the State of New York (FASNY) had been pushing for new legislation to allow blue lights on emergency vehicles.
Research shows blue lights to be more visible, helping to grab the attention of distracted drivers.
Blue lights had previously only been permitted on law enforcement vehicles.
Some fire departments have already installed the new lights, while others are expected to add them very soon.
