BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) -Canisius College, one of 28 Jesuit, Catholic colleges in the nation, was buzzing today with the news that the next pope is a Jesuit. Many students believe it is a positive sign to help lead the Catholic faith into a new era. Students remained silent as they watched the news unfold on television. Once Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was named the next pope many students were overjoyed, but very surprised.
"I'm very excited. The Jesuits teach a lot of different things that I believe the church really needs. One of the big things is basically taking care of the whole person and I'm super excited," said Canisius College Student Katherine Landahl. "It's fascinating."
"We actually have a professor on campus that is from Latin America and I can't wait to talk to her about this," said Milano Rodriguez. "This is definitely diversifying the papacy."
Father Patrick Lynch was also very surprised, since a Jesuit normally does not accept appointed offices and takes a religious vow of humility and simplicity. Fr. Lynch says he's very excited about the new leadership and will pray for the new pope.
"Jesuits take a vow, a simple vow saying they will not seek offices." said Fr. Lynch. "St. Peter Canisius, was asked to become a bishop but said, 'If I were to be a bishop I wouldn't be a Jesuit'."
