Buffalo, N.Y. (WKBW release) -- Organizers of the National Garden Festival on Wednesday announced Buffalo's Front Yard Garden Competition award recipients.
From July 11 to July 16, 13 front yards along Newman Place bordering Cazenovia Park in South Buffalo were transformed by professional landscapers, who donated their time and materials and competed to create the most impressive yards.
From July 16 to July 22, the public had the opportunity to vote for their favorite yard, either in person or online at www.nationalgardenfestival.com.
The public submitted nearly 700 votes. People's Choice awards were given in two categories:
People's Choice Award, Online Voting:
• 1st Place: 87 Newman Place (Murray Brothers Nurseries)
• 2nd Place: 67 Newman Place (Beyond the Basics Property
People's Choice Award, In Person Voting:
• 1st Place: 53 Newman Place (The English Gardener)
• 2nd Place: 87 Newman Place (Murray Brothers Nurseries)
In addition to the public voting, a team of gardening experts reviewed the gardens and bestowed several technical and special awards:
Frederick Law Olmsted Award for Design Excellence:
• 43 Newman Place (Elber's Landscape Service)
Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens Award for Garden Design:
• 87 Newman Place (Murray Brothers Nurseries)
Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens Award for Plant Selection:
• 83 Newman Place (T. O'Donnell Landscaping)
Buffalo in Bloom Low Maintenance Landscape Award:
• 79 Newman Place (Restorff's Landscape Service)
The Front Yard Garden Competition was coordinated by the Western New York State Nursery & Landscape Association, the New York State Certified Nursery and Landscape Professionals, the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy, Visit Buffalo Niagara, and the National Garden Festival organizing committee.

The competition received additional support from local businesses and organizations, including, but not limited to: Akron Tree Farms, Belgarde Hardscapes, Bradley Tree & Landscaping, Cooper Ridge Gardens, Felber's Building Supplies, Great Lakes Concrete Products, Lakeside Sod, Lilac Creek, Lockwood's Greenhouses, Gilson Gardens, International Society of Arboriculture, Russell's Tree & Shrub Farm, Scranton's Thruway Builder's Supplies, Shrub Coat, Unilock and Waterman's Greenhouse.
Now that the competition is complete, the Newman Place residents can take free training on how to maintain their new landscaping.
The National Garden Festival began on June 24 and runs through July 31. With 14 garden walks (including Garden Walk Buffalo - the largest event of its kind in the country), workshops, nationally-recognized speakers, open gardens, and a series of bus tours, this five-week-long festival has something for anyone with (or without) a green thumb.
