This is the headline of today's Business First: "Help Wanted: Skilled Welders."
The report looks at the shortage of trained welders and says area manufacturers are wondering where the next generation of workers will come from. Locally and nationally, manufacturers say it's difficult to find a good welder. The report says there are 450,000 welders in the U.S. The average age is 55, with 80 percent over age 35. Locally, an estimated 400 welders will retire before the year 2020, opening the door for younger people. In all, the report says 17,000 local manufacturing jobs need to be filled by the year 2020.
