Post Office Asks Buffalo If Saturday Service Should Be Eliminated

Buffalo, NY (WKBW) -- The Postal Regulatory Commission is looking for input on whether Americans can do without Saturday delivery service. Paper mail volume has declined and internet service has increased, leading to a projected loss of 238 billion dollars by 2020. Officials say eliminating one day of mail service would save 40 billion dollars.
Today, testimony from one dozen people on how Americans would be affected. The panel is made up of local business leaders, citizens and a postal service employee.
Congress denied USPS' request to go from 6-5 days in 1977, and again in 1980. That was before the internet.
Commission Chairwoman Ruth Goldway says Congress will most likely not approve this until next year, if it's approved at all. It would then take 6 months to implement the changes.
