WESTFIELD, NY ( WKBW ) A dramatic scene unfolded off the shores of Lake Erie near Bourne's Beach in Westfield. A passerby spotted a dog wandering on a chunk of ice late Monday night.
Westfield Fire Department and Erie County Sheriff's Air One responded to the call, but officials were forced to call off the search Monday night, in fear that a rescue effort could scare the dog into the frigid waters.
Tuesday morning, rescuers were back on the lake. After several attempts, they were finally able to return the dog to land safely.
The dog, 8-year-old Koozie had wandered from her owner's home near Evangola State Park on March 11th, about 30 miles from where she was rescued. She suffered only a broken nail, even after spending some time in frigid Lake Erie water, and is recovering with her owner, Phil Frost.
