Some ice fisherman decided to stay in the Small Boat Harbor in Buffalo on Thursday, and not be too far from shore. It was just Wednesday when several dozen people wound up stuck on the lake a couple miles out after the ice shifted away from the shore. One man had to be rescued and the rest finally made it back to land by walking around the cracks or got help.
Satellite images of Lake Erie over the past week show the southern half of the lake does have ice but big cracks have formed over the last several days especially from Dunkirk into Cleveland where chunks have broken off. While there are some solid areas of ice near Buffalo and out about 30 miles, there are cracks starting to form. Also the winds are blowing from the east northeast, helping to carry the ice away from shore. Authorities say for those ice fishing enthusiasts, safety wise you should probably wait until next year to go on the lake, if it doesn't get cold again this season.
