ALBANY, NY (WKBW) -- New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday that he is recusing himself from the investigation of allegations that Governor David Paterson interfered with a criminal domestic violence case involving one of his top aides.

Cuomo is appointing former state Chief Judge Judith Kaye as special counsel in the Paterson probe, which will also look at charges that Paterson lied about receiving free World Series tickets.

Cuomo says he is removing himself from the investigation in order to ensure that the "process is as free from politics as possible."

Cuomo is expected to be a Democratic candidate for governor this year.
