( ABC NEWS ) A new medical study is warning that a popular drug used to fight osteoporosis may have serious and unexpected side effects.

It turns out that Fosamax, a drug that is supposed to strengthen your bones, could actually weaken them.

Specialists at major medical centers say a surprising number of women who have been on Fosamax - or its generic form - for more than 5 years are fracturing their femurs.

It's believed that while the drug at first helps prevent bone loss, over time, it might also limit your bone's natural ability to protect itself from stress. More from Health Link Reporter, Joanna Pasceri.
