BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) -- A Federal Judge ruled over the weekend that Department of Justice Officials will be allowed to investigate the conditions and procedures at the Erie County Holding Center.
This ruling comes after the third suicide in as many months at the facility downtown. The most recent was that of 29-year-old Jeremy Kiekbush, which has sparked some changes in holding center policy, including the addition of nursing positions.
The Sheriff's Department also reported the assault of a guard at the downtown facility over the weekend. Police say an inmate assaulted a guard while being escorted from the visiting area. The guard was treated for minor injuries, and the inmate faces felony assault charges.
The Department of Justice investigation is expected to begin later this month.
