Missing Village of Hamburg Woman Found Dead

HAMBURG, NY (WKBW) -- Village of Hamburg Police believe 76-year-old Margaret Herron disappeared from the apartment she shared with her son in the Village of Hamburg sometime early Wednesday morning. Herron may have suffered from Alzheimer's.

"Earlier today we were notified of a woman that was missing possible Alzheimer's patient she was missing from a residence in the village of hamburg anywhere between midnight and nine this morning," Captain Michael Melisz told Eyewitness News.

With freezing temperatures the Village of Hamburg Police and Fire Department immediately launched their search for the elderly woman.

"With the weather coming the way it is and the way its as cold as its been we made a decision that we had to start immediately with the Fire Department and the search dogs the way they came out they were out here in a matter of minutes and they were activated and out in the woods looking for the person," said Captain Melisz.

According to the National Alzheimer's Association more than 5 million people are living with Alzheimer's Disease in the United States Also six in 10 people with Alzheimer's disease will wander. Many people cannot remember their name or address. they may become disoriented and lost, even in their own neighborhood.

"Its very dangerous when anybody going to be out especially when somebody's suffering form this type of a problem you going to keep an eye on everybody keep em warm and keep em close," Captain Melisz said.

After about two hours in the woods rescuers discovered Mrs. Herron's body. Her body was found near the creeks edge. Melisz believe she may have died from hypothermia.

"It came to a quick ending but unfortunately it didn't come to a happy ending," said Captain Melisz.
