They were at the center of much of the volunteer work that helped transform a Buffalo neighborhood for ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition last November. Now the non-profit group AmeriCorps is getting a helping hand. Jamestown businessman Dan Black just donated a100-thousand square foot warehouse on Southpark Avenue to the organization.
"It's a spectacular 100-thousand square foot building. It has some office space upstairs that's really usable now. Dan Black has really been just a great blessing to us to continue our work continue our work doing with low income remodeling with our partner the Home Depot," AmeriCorps CEO Mark Lazarra told Eyewitness News.
Lazzara and his corporate partner from Home Depot Robert Bertone took Eyewitness News on an exclusive tour of the facility. The warehouse resembled the very home improvement stores that donated the building supplies.
"We have doors, windows. lighting. shower doors," said Bertone.
Everything needed to renovate and remodel a home. The big difference all of the building materials were and will now go to help rebuild and renovate many houses throughout the city.
"Instead of throwing this product down the compactor it'll now go to rebuild and renovate many of the houses where we work and live," said Bertone.
Lazarra says the building supplies are also available to other eligible non-profit organizations. To find out if your organization is eligible you can call: WNY AmeriCorps at 716-558-3325.
AmeriCorps is also looking for people who are "sweet for service". You can join Western New York AmeriCorps for a night of music and sweet treats on February 12th at Shea's Performing Arts Center Buffalo. The event takes place next Friday from 7pm to10pm. Tickets are 30 and 50 dollars.
