Regional school board members met with county and state legislators at the Millenium Hotel in Cheektowaga on Saturday to brain-storming for ideas on using limited funds more wisely. Some of the suggestions included freezing new mandates, rolling back some of the current unfunded mandates, and finding ways to simplify paperwork.

"One of the things we'd like to do is increase the types of services that can be used by school districts through BOCES, the Board of Cooperative Education Services," explains Lorie Sabo of the Erie County Association of School Boards, "These are ways to save money and in this day and age that's exactly what we need to do."

School officials say current mandates cost school districts millions of dollars in local taxes.
