Governor David Paterson wants automated speed cameras on the thruway. Paterson says it will increase safety and bring in much needed revenue for the state. Under the governor's proposed budget, 50 cameras, costing $7.9 million would be installed on the 1-90. 40 of those cameras would be installed in work zones and the remaining would be strategically placed on the thruway. Under the proposal, if you're caught speeding it would cost $100 in a work zone and $50 dollars in other areas. Although it would cost taxpayers $7.9 million initially, the governor believes it will be worth the cost, since the cameras are anticipated to bring in $25 million in revenue annually.
