After the massive flooding in Silver Creek, parts of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church were unusable, but this thanksgiving they say they are on their way back to getting the church to where it once was.
"We are moving slowly. It is definitely a work in progress," said Church Secretary Fran Page.
The office is back up and running. The moisture content is still high in the walls, and in the pews, so there is not a lot of work they can do now. But the water is coming up out of the floor, and the church is drying out. They are now able to hold mass once again in the sanctuary. Today, more help on is the way this holiday season. Kids from Saint Stephen's Catholic Church in Grand Island collected donations, and gave crosses they made to anyone who gave money. The group gave money to Saint Joe's Catholic Church in Gowanda, and to Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
"It felt really good because we were helping everybody who needed it," said Sarah Swagler.
That will be help with the work ahead, to replaster the walls, and refinish the pews. But this Thanksgiving Fran Page is just thankful to be there.
"It is just wonderful to still be here to have a church, and to be in church with our tabernacle back in church," added Page.
