People in Silver Creek are remembering the life of a sixth-grader who died of a sudden illness. Katelin Doctor was a middle school student at Silver Creek Central School District. Her friends wanted to do something to show their support for the family so tonight they held a candelight vigil on the football field.

"She was a great kid. I had her in my basketball camp. She was energetic, lively," said Silver Creek high school senior Noelle Harford.

Katelin died last week after being ill for a few days. The suddenness of her passing and the tragedy of it is having quite an impact on the tight-knit Silver Creek community. "I realized, walking into school, that her passing away changed everybody. Everyone was more friendly, they didn't take things for granted. She changed our high school life," said Brittany Eggleston, who organized the vigil.

The senior class at Silver Creek High School wanted to do something to show their support for the Doctor family, and also to give Katelin's fellow middle schoolers a chance to reflect on Katelin's short life. "Katie was a very good person and she's going to be missed a lot and we're just going to think of all the good times we had with her," said middle school student and friend Madison Granata.

At tonight's vigil, Katelin's favorite song was played as a group of mourners walked around the track paying tribute to the 6th grader's memory. "It shows that we're a school, a community, and that everyone cares about each other," said vigil organizer Abigail Rocque.

They're a small community, trying to come to terms with losing one of their own. "Its really heartbreaking, and it shouldn't happen to anyone and you don't understand why," said Harford.

An autopsy was performed to find out why Katelin died. Officials have not released a cause of death.
