A pastor, an attorney, a firefighter and a county lawmaker are among the half-dozen contenders being named to replace Brian Davis on the Buffalo Common Council.

Rev. Darius Pridgen, pastor of True Bethel Baptist Church said he is thinking about filling the post that was vacated when Brian Davis resigned as Ellicott District councilman Thursday night.

"And tonight I'm going to have a conversation with True Bethel - we'll call it a little family discussion. This church has been very supportive of my efforts and I would not make a decision without their support," Pridgen said.

Barbara Miller-Williams, an Erie County legislator from Buffalo, is another name that is being tossed around city hall. Miller-Williams, however, said she's focused on remaining in county government.

Buffalo firefighter Byron McIntyre might be interested in the job, according to sources. McIntyre ran unsuccessfully for Buffalo school board.

William Trezevant said he will definitely apply for the opening. He ran against Davis six years ago and lost.

"I'd like to bring my ability to serve to the table. And I think it begins with a concrete commitment to the neighborhood, to the residents and bettering Buffalo," Trezevant said.

It is up to the Common Council to pick a successor, who must be of the same political party as the outgoing member and live in the district of 32,000 voters for at least one year.

"We have a good, clean, honest individual -- an independent individual that has the best interest in the Ellicott residents and the entire City of Buffalo at heart," said council president David Franczyk.

The vacancy must be posted on the city's Web site for five days before the council can vote on the replacement, who will serve until the next general election in November.

Whoever wins the election will fill the remainder of the term, which expires at the end of 2011.
