Concord, NY (WKBW) -- Dozens of puppies have been found wandering the streets in Southern Erie County, covered in feces. Thirty animals have been rescued so far, another one was found dead. Animal control officers are searching for more puppies and the people responsible.

Dozens of little puppies, left abandoned in a field in the town of Concord, off of Route 219. They were rescued by Concord Animal Control officer Carol Robinson and taken to the Erie County SPCA. The dogs are young, many only a few months old, and several of them are sick and filthy. "The animals were petrified last night. Very afraid. Many of them had high fevers, and they were covered in feces, " said Gina Browning with the SPCA.

The thirty dogs were found on Sunday. They were a collection of Terriers and mixed breeds. One was already dead after possibly being hit by a car. There are fears that more could be lost in the woods. Traps are set hoping to lure any stragglers to safety. The dogs are now being examined by veterinarians at The Erie County SPCA. They are scared, have skin aliments, and are starved for affection. But shockingly, vets discovered something else. "A lot of them we can tell right away, they are pregnant," Helen Chevalier, Veterinarian told Eyewitness News.

And what's more alarming, for many of these young animals, this was probably not the first time. Officials now suspect that the dogs may have come from a puppy mill. Investigators are trying to discover who would treat these tiny canines in such a cruel way. Also late Monday, SPCA officials said that they discovered many of the dogs have severe skin wounds, injuries caused by excessive scratching of fleas and skin diseased areas.

The SPCA is asking anyone who may have seen anything in the area along Trevett Road in the Town of Concord on Sunday, to call them.
