Extreme Home Makeover Crews Surprise West Side Family

By Jenny Rizzo

Buffalo, NY (WKBW) -- One lucky local family is getting a brand new home and a trip to Disney World, courtesy of ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Sometimes things happen in life that just don't seem real. "Oh my God, I mean, you see it on TV and now its happening to you. I was so overwhelmed, I was shaking," said Delores Powell, a Jamaican native who lives in Buffalo.

For Powell, seeing the Extreme Home Makeover crew outside of her house this morning was like a dream come true. "My house is falling apart. And I think that in not too long, if we don't get any help, we would lose our home. So I am very excited, very happy indeed to know they are here," said Powell.

Powell bought a 6-bedroom house on Massachusetts Avenue back in 2003 thinking it was a "fixer-upper." The seller did not disclose that it was on the city's demolition list. Still, this single mom didn't give up. "She was able to scrape together some money and she worked on the home herself with her then-13 year old son," said Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown.

Making just $100 a week as a home health aide, Delores tried hard to keep the home in livable condition for her four kids. The Extreme Home Makeover producers were impressed with her story and her dedication to volunteerism.

"This woman has come to this country as an immigrant from Jamaica to give her family a better life. She works nights and then takes time during the day to give back to her community," said David Stapleton, owner of David Homes, the builder tapped by the TV show to lead the building project.

An activist with the community group PUSH Buffalo, Delores works on revitalization projects on the city's Westside. "Don't give up, keep fighting, be strong, be positive," she said.

For someone who gives so much to so many, the TV show decided it was time to give back. Over the next week, thousands of volunteers are helping to build the Powell family a brand new home while Dolores and her kids go on a vacation. "For the first time in our entire life, our family will be going on a vacation. We never had a vacation before!"

The Powells left their house today for the airport and they won't return until next weekend. ABC film crews will be on site this week, documenting this whole process for the episode, which will likely air in a few months.
