Law Enforcement: Driver in Clarence Crash Going 90 Miles Per Hour

It is a crash that law enforcement says could have been prevented.

"The 02 Nissan was traveling at a speed of approximately 90 miles an hour," said Erie County Sheriff's Sgt. Scott Joslyn.

Using a formula, the Sheriff's department is able to come up with that number. Sgt. Joslyn says Viktor Shapiro was going down Strickler, went through the stop sign, and smashed into Mark Grimmer's Odyssey. Grimmer was driving with his wife, observing the speed limit. Both cars ended up on nearby private property. Amanda Slisz was the only one wearing a seatbelt in the Nissan, according to authorities. She was the front seat passenger. Shapiro, Slisz, Mark Brown and Megan Schnorr were all pronounced dead at the scene.

"This one is forever is going to be etched in my mind because of the ages of the kids," said Joslyn.

The Sheriff's department spoke with eyewitnesses, as well as Mark Grimmer and his wife Bonnie. Mark has been released from the hospital. His wife is now in good condition with a hip injury. Both were wearing seatbelts. They spoken with detectives about seeing the Sentra.

"As it approached the intersection they were able to see the tail lights of the vehicle, and at no time saw the brake lights come on, made a comment to each other that there is no way that vehicle will stop, and it proceeded into the intersection, and as she says in a flash both vehicles were off of the road ," explained Joslyn.

Investigators do not believe that the teens were drag racing with another car, or that alcohol played a role in the accident.

"When we leave here the question that everybody is going to have that I can't answer, is why," added Joslyn.

There will be a prayed vigil for the teens at eight Friday night at St. Gregory the Great in Amherst.
