Four teenagers were killed Sunday night when the car they were driving allegedly sped past a stop sign and struck a van. The accident happened shortly after 8:30pm at County and Strickler Roads in the Town of Clarence. The two people in the van were taken to ECMC, where the male victim was treated and later released.
A similar deadly crash 12 years ago prompted a change at an intersection in North Collins. That 1997 crash claimed the lives of three teenagers and left three other teens injured. Police say in that case one of the teenage drivers blew past a stop sign at Ketchum Road and Route 249 in North Collins before broadsiding another car. Since that crash a flashing light has been added at the intersection to warn drivers of the stop sign on Ketchum Road. It's a safety feature some friends of this week's crash victims in Clarence would like to see added to the intersection of County and Strickler roads.
"I just really truly believe something needs to be done there after this," says Sally Salzer, a friend of 19-year-old Mark Brown who was killed on Sunday.
"I think they should probably put some lights out there. It's too dark. You can't see what's going on around you," adds Krystina Frangos, another friend of Brown.
It does not look likely that changes will be made at the Clarence intersection anytime soon though. County officials inspected the intersection following Sunday's crash and say they've determined the intersection is safe and well-marked as it is now as long as people obey the speed limit and drive safely.
