Its a cold case solved for the Buffalo Police Department. The long arm of the law caught up to a suspected killer on the run for more than two years. The suspect is wanted here in Buffalo but was caught across the state in Syracuse.
A Crimestoppers tip is what put an end to two years on the run for 30-year-old Donnell Lloyd of Buffalo. An annoymous caller led the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force to an apartment in Syracuse where Lloyd had been living.
"He gave us the slip a couple of times, here in Buffalo," said Supervisor Deputy U.S. Marshal Daniel Larish of the Western District of New York.
Lloyd had been on parole for a robbery conviction when police say he shot and killed 25-year-old Larry Kemp. The two were acquaintances and the violent confrontation took place on Warring Avenue in Buffalo back on September 23, 2007.
Police say Lloyd then cut off his ankle monitoring bracelet and took off. "I wouldn't say the trail had gone cold but it certainly wasn't very hot. We were actively working it, have been almost two years looking for Lloyd," said Larish.
The U.S. Marshals Service has followed up on many leads but it was the Crimestoppers tip this week that led them in the direction of Syracuse.
"We identified that this West Castle Street was a good address, that there was a high probability that he'd be there," said Larish.
The apartment where Lloyd had been living actually belonged to his cousin. Given Lloyd's long history of violent crime, the Marshal Regional Fugitive Task Force took no chances when they surrounded the house and moved in early this morning.
"We had 15 officers from New York State Police, Syracuse Police, U.S. Marshalls, New York State Parole and Buffalo Police Department," said Larish.
They found Lloyd in the bedroom and he gave up peacefully. He will now go on trial for murder and the Marshals Service can move onto finding the next wanted fugitive. "Its nice to see after two years of tracking him that the hard work paid off with the arrest," said Larish.
