Crumbling Statler Closes Delaware Ave. Until Monday

Delaware Avenue near Niagara Square will be closed until at least Monday as work continues to repair the crumbling concrete facade at downtown's Statler Towers, city building inspectors said on Thursday.

A small portion of the building's decorative cornice work fell from the 18th floor of the 87-year-old building on Wednesday night, sending about 300 pounds of concrete crashing onto the sidewalk and Delaware Avenue below.

No one was injured. The building's new owner, New Buffalo Statler Redevelopment, will pay for cleanup costs and inspect the building to make sure no more pieces of concrete fall, said William Sovino, the group's attorney.

In June of 2003, in a similar incident, pieces of the decorative cornice fell, resulting in the closure of portions of Delaware Avenue for more than a month.
