QUARTERBACK TRENT EDWARDS
Training Camp - PM Practice - July 28, 2009
On his accuracy this training camp:
There are ones that are always sticking out in my mind that I’m missing, so I like to think that I’m getting better each day that I’ve put a lot of work in the off-season working on my timing with the receivers and my accuracy. But I’m not going to tell right now the throws that I’ve missed during camp. Those are the ones that are going to keep me up at night and those are the ones that are going to get us beat and you know my personality. I’m a perfectionist. I’m trying to make sure I’m perfect on every play and making sure that we’re all on the same page. I do feel like we’re making progress and I do feel like I’m getting more and more rhythm with the receivers, but I do still have a long way to go.
On the energy of the crowd at the first night practice:
This is my third year of doing this and it always feels like the first night practice there’s always guys a little more anxious; jumping off sides, making little mental mistakes, mental errors here and there, and that’s going to happen. That’s going to happen in the games but it’s a matter of fixing those mistakes and making sure that you’re finishing practice strong. I really felt like those five plays, the ones that were in there we’re really making a conscience effort of making sure we weren’t making those mistakes. And I was very pleased with that, besides the fact that the first part of practice I don’t think went very well.
On his accuracy with the deep passes tonight:
Yeah, and there are some that I’ve missed though, too and that’s again like I said, going to keep me up and that’s why I’m staying out here trying to work at it. I need to work with Lee (Evans) and Terrell (Owens) more and that’s what the preseason games are going to allow us to do. That’s what all these practices are going to allow us to do. We’re reporting a lot earlier than a lot of the other teams have reported this season and that will maybe allow us to improve a lot of our deep ball passing game maybe a little bit. So that’s encouraging that I do have a little more time to work on it, but like I said I’m going to continue to try and get better for this team and the 10 other guys around me on this offense need me to do that.
On there being more of a focus to get the ball to the running back:
That’s something I think we need to do a better job of. I don’t think we’ve gotten them the ball a ton so far during camp and those guys are weapons that we have. I know Dominic Rhodes, coming from the Colts offense, where they get the running backs the ball a lot and we threw Fred (Jackson) and Marshawn (Lynch) the ball a lot last season. That’s something we need to keep defenses off balance and keep them guessing when they do drop in their coverage and we’re not in a run call. I need to be able to do a good job of getting the running backs the ball and allow them to break some tackles, and get us some first downs so that’s something that I need to work on as well.
On having tips for RB Fred Jackson at quarterback:
That’s really frustrating me because I do feel like I have a lot of potential at the receiver position (laughs). I really feel handcuffed out there. They just want me to block and that’s not really my strength. My strength is running, getting the ball in my hands and making guys miss in the passing game, but our quarterback I think in that particular set can’t get me the ball, so that’s kind of frustrating on that side of it because I’ve worked harder at this off-season trying to make sure that my receiver skills are where they need to be. But its just something to try and keep teams off balance and keep guys guessing and it makes our defense prepare for the Miami’s and teams that do do that. It’s good for our defense to go up against that, too.
On the three running backs being a dynamic set in the backfield:
You don’t think that I’m dynamic out there either though? (laughs) I was thinking we could just put me back in there and it’s kind of the same replacement as Roscoe Parrish, but I don’t think so. It gives us something else to change things up, mix things up a little bit and I do think we need to work on that and we’re going to continue to improve.
