State Trooper Killed in Accident

The accident happened mid-morning on July 3rd. Off duty, New York State Trooper John Gorke, 47, was struck and killed while he was riding his bicycle on State Route 20, in the Town of Pompey, in Onondaga County.

Police tell Eyewitness News that 20-year-old, Charles W. Brewer from Cohocton, New York was westbound on State Route 20 driving a 2007 Chevrolet Impala when he came up behind Gorke, striking him from behind. Dave Schnall from Fayetteville,NY was also riding with John and witnessed the accident.

The 19-year veteran sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was assigned to the Thruway Station in Syracuse. During the summer month's, John was assigned to the Canal Detail which patrols waterways in Central New York. He leaves behind a wife and three sons.

The State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating the accident and charges to Brewer may be pending.
