NF Blind Man's Guide Dog Attacked

By Jennifer Stanonis

A german shepherd service dog, named Prince, has been the eyes for his blind owner for four years. Last Thursday the owner and his wife were in the front yard of their home on Ferchen Street in Niagara Falls when Prince was attacked. The couple says two dogs came running from a neighbor's yard and started biting Prince, grabbing his right hind leg. Finally the couple, with the help of a friend, scared the dogs away and brought Prince to Gerber Animal Hospital for emergency surgery. Niagara County Sheriff officials and animal control officers responded immediately to a neighbor's call during the attack. After further investigation the two dogs that allegedly attacked Prince were quickly taken to the Niagara County SPCA and are being held there pending court proceedings. One dog is a pit bull and the other a brindle mix.

Residents in the area say Prince was the kindest dog and the alleged attack dogs do have a history of aggression. "Nothing documented but there have been a few minor ones in the past," one neighbor said. "These dogs, I mean I feel bad for the owner but they're a nuisance to the neighborhood. They're always right at the fence just growling at you."

Many neighborhood residents say they're worried about Prince who had to have two surgeries, and hope he'll still be able to help his blind master. "His leg is bandaged... he's probably going to be ok but they're still not sure," a neighbor said. "Great dog, love him. It was devastating to hear about."

The owner of the dogs claims she wasn't home at the time of the alleged attack and her dogs were secured. She's facing charges of having dangerous and unleashed dogs. She's scheduled to be back in Town of Wheatfield court on July 9th.

The owners of Prince say he's valued at $40,000 and didn't fight back during the attack because he's trained to not be aggressive.
