In a few years, you could make the six hour trip from Buffalo to New York City in half the time. The hour long trip to Rochester could be reduced to less than half-hour.
High-speed rail is coming to New York State and President Barack Obama is making $8 billion available to ten high-speed corridors in the country.
One of them is the Empire Corridor, from Buffalo to Albany to New York City.
"Imagine whisking through town at speeds of over 100 mph, walking only a few steps to public transportation and ending up just blocks from your destination," President Obama said during a news conference in Washington, D.C. "Imagine what a great project that would be to rebuild America."
Congressman Brian Higgins likes the idea.
"Buffalo would be a great place to start," Higgins said. "So my hope is the president would see the wisdom of that and we have talked directly to the Secretary of Transportation about the Buffalo to New York City corridor. So I think we're moving closer to the possibility."
It will take years before the rail line is up and running, but already supporters of the Buffalo Central Terminal are calling for some money to renovate the landmark and make it Buffalo's high-speed rail hub.
"Why not make this investment? We can only do it one time. Why not make this investment in a historic facility on Buffalo's east side," said Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown. "And not only resurrect this historic facility but also renovate the east side of Buffalo."
