Bracing For Extreme Cold
A fire broke out at a home on Columbus Street in Buffalo on Monday. Flames were shooting out of the chimney. No one was hurt but the home was badly damaged. It was a tough night for firefighters battling a fire and the cold. "Everything ices up including ourselves. The guys get in there. They work hard. They get soaked. They get frozen. It's difficult to move. The equipment freezes on you. It's just makes a difficult job to begin with, 10 times harder," said Buffalo Fire Chief John Mogavero. It is also difficult for schools. This week Buffalo School Superintendent Dr. James Williams sent out a warning over the phone about the weather. "Temperatures are expected to reach single digits this week with wind chills in the minus 10 to minus 20 degree range," said Williams. District officials tell Eyewitness News, if wind chills reach minus 15 to minus 20 degrees school will likely be canceled. It is difficult, not only for those waiting for the bus, but for the thousands of students who don't take the bus. "There is a population of students who walk to school. We'll make our best judgement call based on the weather conditions if it's safe for them to be at a bus stop or to walk to school. If there is a question about student safety, schools will be closed," said district spokesperson Stefan Mychajliw. But for Buffalo Firefighters it's a different story. They will be layering up this week. They have to work no matter what the temperature. Most ViewedMore Good Stuff |
