Amherst Residents Won't Vote On Downsizing

Two measures to take the issue of downsizing to a vote of the people failed at the Amherst town board meeting Monday night. One resolution, by board member Deborah Bucki didn't even make it to a vote, the other by board member Barry Weinstein failed 4 to 3.

Some board members said they were voted into office to make those decisions and a vote of the people was not necessary. Those against downsizing also said the savings would not be worth losing representation. Other board members, however, disagreed saying at the very least the people of Amherst should have the right to decide.

Civic activist Kevin Gaughan said he is very disappointed in the decision. He called the Amherst town board "disfunctional". He says the savings, if 25 towns downsized and 16 villages voted to dissolve, would be 11 million dollars. Gaughan is vowing to petition the citizens of Amherst to put the measure on the ballot.
