Tim Russert Plaza dedicated at Bills stadium

By Jenny Rizzo

The family of one of the Bills' biggest fans, the late Tim Russert, attended today's game and accepted an honor on Tim's behalf.

Smiling up from the walk of fame at Ralph Wilson stadium is the Bills' biggest fan carved in granite. "We're honored to have members of the Russert family here with us today for this special occasion," said Russ Brandon, Chief Operating Officer of the Buffalo Bills.

Tim's wife Maureen and his son Luke were on hand to unveil the new plaque, renaming a section of the stadium as Tim Russert Plaza. "I can't imagine anything that Tim would love better than being commemorated here because the Bills gave Tim his highest highs and his lowest lows," said Maureen Orth.

The Buffalo Bills family wanted a chance to thank the network broadcaster for his continued support over the years. Russert was known for closing out his Meet the Press program with a Bills cheer. "Tim had great passion for the Bills. And he reveled in our wins and forgave us for our fumbles," said Brandon, quoting owner Ralph Wilson in a letter read aloud at the dedication ceremony.

Bills fans like the newly dedicated plaza, calling it an appropriate honor for a great Buffalonian. "He was one of the biggest Bills backers. I've lived in Buffalo my whole life, since 1940s, so yeah, I agree with it," said Doug Wielinski.

"That's pretty good, he's a Bills fan and a big part of the community and I think that's good for, especially Western New York," said Todd Vanden Berghe.

"He loved the Bills and he gave so much back to this country. And this is a nice way for them to give to him," said Doneen Nikas, another Bills fan.

The Russert family is back in Buffalo for the first holiday weekend without Tim. They say there's nothing that Tim would have loved more than being honored by his favorite team. "We really know he's with you guys and the Bills forever. Thank you so much," said Maureen.
