October storm anniversary

October storm anniversary

By Jenny Rizzo

Two years ago tonight a freak storm dumped nearly 20 inches of snow on Western New York, downing trees and snapping power lines. Since then, residents have worked hard to re-landscape their yards and neighborhoods.

The October 12-13, 2006 storm caused a lot of destruction. Over 57,000 trees were lost and there's been an effort over the last two years to replace at least 30,000 of them.

Burroughs Drive in Snyder is a charming neighborhood bursting with the reds, yellows and greens of fall foliage season. Yet two years ago this time it was blanketed with snow and broken tree limbs. "It's a beautiful street and it still looks pretty. We were afraid once they took the trees that it would destroy the look of the street, but it actually doesn't look too bad," said homeowner Laura Monroe.

It doesn't look bad, because a lot of work has been put into this street by both residents and the town. They've come a long way since October 2006, when 7 News first spoke to Monroe. "Its kind of weird to be without power and all of the luxuries we take for granted every day," she told us back then.

The Monroes lost five trees, including one in the front yard. "This whole mounded area was one huge tree. It was a shame that they had to take it down," she said.

None of her trees have been replaced yet, though some of this street have been by a group called Re-Tree WNY, which is replanting lost trees with donated money. "For each one that our volunteers plant, we're asking that municipality to meet us halfway," said Paul Maurer.

Thanks to the program, about 10,000 new trees have been planted throughout 20 communities. The reason why so many trees had to be cut down after the storm is because the limbs broke from the weight of the snow piled atop the leaves. If over 50% of a tree's canopy is damaged, generally the tree itself is lost. The 2006 storm was considered a freak occurrence, but Monroe still thinks there could be another October surprise. "In Buffalo, yeah it could happen again. Hopefully it doesn't though," said said.

Re-Tree WNY still has 20,000 more trees to plant to reach their goal by 2012. They run solely on donation money, and there will be a fundraiser held next week Saturday at 6pm at First Presbyterian Church in Buffalo.
